Multi‐scale mosaics in top‐down pest control by ants from natural coffee forests to plantations

چکیده
While top-down control plays an important role in shaping both natural and agricultural food webs, we lack insights into how effects vary across spatial scales. We used a multi-scale survey of coffee pests diseases by arboreal ants to examine if colony location creates small-scale mosaic around trees the strength that varies between sites at landscape scale. investigated pest disease levels on shrubs different distances from shade with without Crematogaster spp. ant 59 along management intensity gradient southwestern Ethiopia. Within sites, significantly suppressed herbivory leaf rust less than 10 m nesting trees. Top-down varied stronger free-feeding near colonies lower skeletonizer higher canopy cover. conclude is highly heterogeneous scales, as consequence biology predator small scale herbivore density or changes herbivore–ant interactions

Limitation of nesting resources for ants in Colombian forests and coffee plantations
1. This study examines limitation of nesting resources for leaf-litter and twig-nesting ants as a mechanism of diversity loss across an intensification gradient of coffee production in Colombia. Twelve farms were selected and classified into four management types: forest, polygeneric shade coffee, monogeneric shade coffee, and sun coffee (unshaded coffee monocultures). 2. At each of the farms, ...
متن کاملPest Control in Agricultural Plantations Using Image Processing
Monocropped plantations are unique to India and a handful of countries throughout the globe. Essentially, the FOREST approach of growing coffee along with in India has enabled the plantation to fight many outbreaks of pests and diseases. Mono cropped Plantations are under constant threat of pest and disease incidence because it favours the build up of pest population. To cope with these problem...
متن کاملSeasonal Variation of Earthworm Abundances and Biomass in Natural Forests and Plantations (North of Iran)
Soil productivity and plant growth are usually affected by biological activities of earthworms. The objective of this study was a comparative evaluation of earthworm abundances in 20-year-old plantations of Alder, Oak, Maple and Cypress with the adjacent natural mixed broad-leaved deciduous forest in the Caspian region of Iran. In this research one sample plot, each 1 ha; was selected in every ...
متن کاملForest bolsters bird abundance, pest control and coffee yield.
Efforts to maximise crop yields are fuelling agricultural intensification, exacerbating the biodiversity crisis. Low-intensity agricultural practices, however, may not sacrifice yields if they support biodiversity-driven ecosystem services. We quantified the value native predators provide to farmers by consuming coffee's most damaging insect pest, the coffee berry borer beetle (Hypothenemus ham...
متن کاملWood-nesting ants and their parasites in forests and coffee agroecosystems.
Agricultural intensification is linked to reduced species richness and may limit the effectiveness of predators in agricultural systems. We studied the abundance, diversity, and species composition of wood-nesting ants and frequency of parasitism of poneromorph ants in coffee agroeco systems and a forest fragment in Chiapas, Mexico. In three farms differing in shade management and in a nearby ...
